How can I make Assignee required for just one screen in the workflow?

We have a project that allows Assignee to be non-required. However, at just one point in the workflow, for just one status, we would like to force the user who changes the status to fill in the Assignee. I can't figure out how to do it on the workflow or using an automation. What am I missing? Has somebody else done this?

To make the Assignee field required for just one status in your Jira Cloud workflow without using any plugins, you can use a combination of Workflow Validators and Transition Screens. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Add a Transition Screen:

   • Go to Project Settings > Screens. (or Issues => screens global menu)
   • Create a new screen (e.g., "Assignee Required Screen") and add the "Assignee" field to this screen.

2. Associate the Screen with the Transition:

   • Go to Project Settings > Workflows.
   • Edit the workflow for your project.
   • Click on the transition where you want to make the Assignee required (e.g., "To In Progress").
   • In the transition properties, add the "Assignee Required Screen" you created earlier. note: it will also contain a comment field, this is not an option.

3. Add a Validator to the Transition:

   • While still in the workflow editor, click on the same transition.
   • Click on Validators and then Add Validator.
   • Select Field Required Validator.
   • Choose the "Assignee" field and add the validator.

4. Publish the Workflow:

   • After making these changes, publish the workflow.

This setup will ensure that when a user transitions an issue to the specified status, they will be presented with a screen where the Assignee field is mandatory.
