Why does my Plan show 4 issues without parent (when all issues have parents assigned)

I am evaluating Jira Premium & specifically, Plans. I have created some dummy projects with Epics, stories, tasks, some teams etc. All tickets are associated with parents, the parent for the Epics is the initiative (plan)

However in my Plan - timeline view, it shows 4 issues without parent (and underneath, the 4 Epics) and I don't understand why. I've been through the documentation and not any clearer

Also, if you run a filter (query) and display the Parent field, is it empty?

Hi @Christine Houlding ,

You can check you issue filter. If the filter is from initiative to subtask. Make sure your issues have followed the heirarchy. E.i base on the filter it will show the intiative. Then if you expand it will show epic then task. If the epic dont have initiative parent it will not connect because the heirarchy not followed and will displayed in without parent. Same goes if task dont have epic etc.

Thanks for responding - here are some screenshots showing the Plans view (which shows issues without parent) and filter view (showing the Epics do indeed have the parent, which is the initiative)

Thanks for responding, I have added screenshots against John's answer below. The Issue sources for my Plan are the Jira projects themselves, rather than a filter.

You can see from the screenshots that the Epics do have the initiative as the parent, the stories & tasks have the Epic as the parent, etc
