Is it possible to use a object reference as a smart value?

I am looking to compare against 2 values, one of them being a integer and the other being the amount of references from that object. Then it should subtract the amount of references from the integer and then it will update a second integer field with the new total.

If any more information is required I would be more than happy to provide.

It would have to be in an asset, We will not be using Issue fields for this as this is just for managing assets for now and having it open a Jira issue every time we change the original value would become overwhelming with too many issues being opened.

Thanks for the further info re this use case.

As you said, the output value needs to be updated whenever the asset is being linked to another user, which will happen in your License asset.

So where the output value would be sitting at? Still in an asset or a Jira issue field? That would make a difference from a solution point of view.

Both of these values are being taken from the same asset, But one is the asset amount and the other is the amount of users that asset is being distributed to, since I am using that asset as a license it would be helpful to have it reflect the current amount of licenses we have as well as all the licenses we have purchased. They will not be used in issues, this is purely from IT side,

The output value needs to be updated whenever that asset is being linked to another user.

The references will not be pre-loaded, they will be updated dynamically whenever we lease out a license so we need integer value to be updated dynamically as well the moment a license is leased to an user.
