Importing from a Backup

I am wanting to import Service Management data from a previous backup.  If I do an import will it overwrite all automations and workflows?  Also, does a service management backup restoration affect projects in other modules such as Jira Software and Confluence?

Overwriting Automations and Workflows:

- If you are restoring a full backup of Jira Service Management, it would generally replace the entire Jira Service Management dataset with the contents of the backup.

=> This means that all the existing projects, issues, configurations, automations, and workflows in your Jira Service Management instance would be replaced by those in the backup.

- If you have custom workflows or automations, they will be overwritten if they don't exist in the backup or if there are differences between the current state and the backup.

 

Effect on Other Modules/Products:

- Jira Service Management, Jira Software, and Jira Core all share the same underlying database in a single Jira instance. If you restore a backup for Jira (whether it's specifically from Service Management or not), it will replace the entire Jira instance data, including Jira Software projects and configurations.

- Confluence, however, is a separate product with its own database. Restoring a backup in Jira should not directly impact your Confluence instance. However, if you have integrations or application links set up between Jira and Confluence, you might need to reconfigure or check these after the restoration.

 

Important Considerations:

- Always take a current backup before performing any restore. This way, if something goes wrong or if the outcome isn’t what you expected, you can revert to the most recent state. Restoring a backup is typically a destructive operation, meaning it will replace current data. Make sure to review and understand the implications before performing a restore.

- If you're only looking to import specific projects or data without affecting the entire instance, consider using Project Import or other more granular import/export tools provided by Atlassian.

- Test the restoration process in a staging or test environment first, if possible. This will give you an idea of what to expect and allow you to address any potential issues before performing the operation on your production environment.
