Get Status of External Jira Tickets

Question

I don't know if this has been asked before but, is it possible to display the status of an external Jira environments tickets in a ticket in a ticket I am working on.

For example, tickets come in asking for work to be done in a system my company does not maintain. I then have to submit a ticket to the appropriate party's Jira environment that is not owned my me. I can add an external link to my ticket to my ticket for easy reference but is it possible to also display that tickets status in the links like when I escalate to another project in my environment so I do not have to manually check the status to see if it changed.

If it is not possible in the links section, is it possible to do this in a custom field?

Two Jira instances can be connected together via a few different technologies (3rd Party Apps, webhooks). Then you could create a custom field and have the remote Jira update it. Maybe much more than you had in mind.

Maybe you could do this: have a webhook initiated as a post function in a workflow as the ticket transitions in the workflow. Have that webhook initiate an Automation rule that sends an email to the remote Jira with the ticket number of the source JIra. Another automation rule picks up that email and then updates the remote Jira tickets.

If I were you, I'd solve it by syncing the external issues to my Jira.
