Sub-task vs Subtask?

In our environment, we have both

sub-task and subtask (note the hyphen)

Does anyone else have both?

Is this native in Atlassian?

Was it called sub-task and then changed to subtask at some point?

Or is this a mistake in our environment?

It looks like the more popular one is "sub-task"

It is my understanding that the default out of the box is "Sub-task". As mentioned by other community leaders mentioned, any other admins can create new issue type (i.e. "Subtask") in the system, and the system will not stop the action.

This is why it is so important for all system admins to communicate with each other or the admin team on all the changes that he/she conducted to avoid issues like this one. When system admins make a change to the configuration, it impacts the entire systems if it is done not properly.

The default one that comes with Jira is sub-task, but there is nothing that prevent you from creating a new sub task issue type called subtask and that would be my guess that an admin did.

Where do you see that information?

The global Issue Types list comes with the "Sub-task" issue type already created. These are the issue types available for Company Managed projects.

If you have any Team Managed projects in your environment then you may see that they created the subtask issue type with the name "Subtask" (no hyphen).

If you are seeing the two options within a Company Managed project or in the global Issue Types list, that would be because a Jira Administrator created an addition issue type named "Subtask". If you see it when you are creating a filter based on issue type....

...or in other locations where you might choose from a list of issue types, then you may be seeing the "Subtask" issue type that belongs to a Team Managed project.
