How to upload a video as a link not a thumbnail?

Aura Hill

Hi all, I have an MP4 file I want to upload to a Confluence page, but I want it to display as a link rather than a large video player that you can watch on the page.

Confluence documentation says " As with all file types, when you insert an audio or video file you'll have the option to display it as a thumbnail or as a link on your page." but I don't see that option when I upload the video to the page. I need to host the video in Confluence, not anywhere else like YouTube.

Has anyone been able to display a MP4 file as a link?

Thanks,

Aura

Hi @Aura Hill how are you attaching the video to the page? Is it using the attachments macro? Are you uploading in Edit mode?

Just paste a Weblink (Chain-Symbol -> Weblink) and copy the URL (right-klick the video/picture -> copy Video-Link) before that.

@Aura Hill If the video is attached to the page, I believe you can:

Open the File Attachments page
Right-click the video file in the Name column and select Copy Link Address
Return to edit mode on the page and insert a link to this copied URL

I haven't tried this myself, so I'm not sure how this affects playing the video when you click the link.

If this doesn't work for you (or if it does) or you have further questions, please respond here.

Put an Expand on the page (Insert Elements -> Expand), then put the video in the expand. You'll then have a one liner one the page where you can put the video name.. and if the user expands it, they can watch it right on the page.

I'm uploading in Edit mode. I have a list of resources, 2 are links, 1 is a PowerPoint file and 1 is this video file. I would like the video file to blend in with the list, so I don't want to use the Attachments macro.

Thank you, this worked for me. Unfortunately, it does affect playing the video. When I click the link, the video file automatically downloads and then has be opened to play, so not an ideal solution. But visually, it works.

Aura Hill

Thanks Chris, this method worked as well. However, still resulted in the downloading issue.

If you don't want the download action, you could publish the video as a video onto another page and in the page you wish to only show a link point the link to the video page.

Upload the video anywhere on the page wherever you like it, and then do a right click on the video thumbnail. You will find an option to choose view as a link. Just select the option and it's done.

Aura Hill

I don't have this option when I right click on the thumbnail.

Hello! Not an answer, but how did you end up doing it? I'm currently stuck on the same issue. I wanted to ask too if you had to post the videos on another Confluence page or did you attach videos straight from your desktop? @Aura Hill

Aura Hill

I posted the video on another page and linked to it.
