Can I create a custom field / dropdown that displays different object types?

Can I create a custom field/dropdown that displays the names of object types? Rather than objects themselves.  



So I would like to make a dropdown where the user can select which type of Computer part they want to add to the system via a form (amongst other uses) 

All of the categories have a reference as "computer parts"

I have tried various AQL combinations on the custom field, but the list always remains empty. 

Is this even possible? Or would i have to do this manually via a more complicated form/automation?

You would need to create either "place holder" objects that represent the parts, or a separate custom field with the options you want listed.
