Update Epic's custom field value based on its stories' value using Automation for Jira.

Question

Hi Team,

We have a requirement to auto update a custom field value based on the selection it has in its stories. We have automation for Jira installed on our instance

Example:  If there are 10 stories in an epic and 6 have Option_1 selected for a custom field and 4 have Option_2, then the EPIC custom field would be Option_1.  Take the higher valued custom field option and populate the custom field at the EPIC level.

Note: we are referring to the same field in both epic and its stories.

Any help here would be appreciated!

When do you need to implement this, and what version of Jira Server, automation are you using?

I ask because the Lookup Issues action was just completed and is rolling out for Jira Server: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JIRAAUTOSERVER-53

With Lookup Issues, and smart value list filtering, this scenario will be easy to implement.

This could be a solution

You would need to create 2 number fields.

Create an automation that updates the number field, or decreases the number field on changing the custom field with the option values.

You could then the you should be able to have an automation the for an epic compares the number fields and set the value on the Epic based upon the highest number.
