I cannot select any of the options in the sidebar (backlog/active sprint/reports etc.)

I can only view the screen that the project/board etc open on (for my main board this is the backlog, and i cannot see the active sprint that I set up and started). 

I tried creating a test project, created a backlog and then started a sprint, this took me to the active sprint page for the test, but then I cannot view the backlog.

Any ideas?
