Subtasks on Kanban Board

Hello,

first let me tell you that I am new to Jira and am setting it up for the company I work for.

So I really do not know that much yet.

Our projects are compnay-managed

We work with Epics - Tasks - Subtasks.

Our Swimlanes are sorted by Epics with Tasks showing on the Kanban Baord.

And this is where my troubles start. The Subtasks are also showing on the Board and I don't want that.

They should only be visible eather within the task or as a drop down menu of some sorts. So how do I do that?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can handle this a couple of ways. But you start both in the same place.

While on the Board, click the 3 dots menu in the upper right and select Board Settings.

Click on the General menu option if not there already.

Easiest (for Kanban board, not Scrum board) - scroll to the bottom to the Kanban board sub-filter section. It probably has something like this there:

fixVersion in unreleasedVersions() OR fixVersion is EMPTY

Click into that and change to this: (fixVersion in unreleasedVersions() OR fixVersion is EMPTY) AND issuetype != Sub-task

That will prevent Sub-tasks from showing on the board.

Or you can edit the board filter itself to include the AND issuetype != Sub-task code in the filter.

Hello, thank you, this worked very well. I have one follow up question.

I saw a layout, that looked like the one in the foto. The Sub Tasks are shown in a drop down menu?

How can I do this?

That looks like it is either Jira Work Management project (Business type) or maybe a Team-managed project.

It is a Team-Managed project. I hoped I could do something like that to our own projects.

I'm still looking for this and can confirm that only kanban boards for Company-Managed projects work the way you would expect and display stories in swimlanes under their assigned epic grouped with visible child subtasks.

Why is this not available for Team-Managed projects? This is basic project organization.

With the Advanced Agile and Kanban Boards apps, you can get the same experience for company-managed projects—plus many additional capabilities for Kanban teams, such as column groups, personal WIP limits, efficiency counters, and more. You might find this helpful.

I agree that this is basic project organization. I would vote for Subtasks to appear as an expand/collapse item on Work Item Cards for Team-Managed Projects as my number 1. If that is a big lift, I would request a V1 feature to allow subtasks to simply appear on the Kanban Board for Team-Managed projects. If that is attainable, I would like grouping by parent work item so that we can see progress of subtasks on the board.

Ideally two main "Groups"
G1: Feaure/Epic - Shows all work items/deliverables for a given Epic. (no subtasks)
G2: Work Item/Deliverable - Shows all sub-tasks to complete the item.

If we had Subtasks appear on Work item cards as a drop down, I would be ok with torching the idea of having subtasks appear on the board as individual cards.
