Is there a way to add a rank field to issue types and then allow the rank to update automatically if ranking within a project changes?
If you've got JIRA Software, then that is already done. It implements a global rank field by default, and uses it when you are ranking things in the boards.So, I'm not sure I understand the question, as you already have the rank field.
