How do I require a certain resolution to have a Linked Issue?

We have situations where we have tickets that are 'child' issues via linked. We can say that an issue is closed due to it being a duplicate or a child issue of another. As such, if a person sets a resoltuion to either Duplicate or Child then we need to require the issue have a link on transition.

Is this possible, if so, how?

Off the shelf, no, there's no way to do this.

The closest you could get would be to automate the creation of a link when someone leaves it blank.

We are probably trying to keep within vanilla JSM as it's not a massive set up and we don't really have a lot of budget to customise. So I assume there's no way out of the box to do this?

You will need to add a validator to the workflow transition.

To do that, you'll need one of the advanced scripting or automation apps.

Of course, as an Adaptavist, it would be remiss of me not to mention Scriptrunner can do it - there's an example of such a validator at https://docs.adaptavist.com/sr4jc/latest/features/workflow-extensions/validators/example-validators (it's on create, but you can use it on any transition)
