Is there any way to add a custom field which is an "issue"?

We have release issue tickets to track the process of our releases. We would like to add a field to issues called "Release Issue", which would be the Release linked to the issue.

I don't see any ability to do this. Am I missing something?

What we're really trying to accomplish is to link the release ticket to the other ones, but there does not seem to be a way to add a link to a bunch of tickets via bulk actions.

Have you considered using automation to do the bulk linking? All that you would need is a JQL that picks up all the issues that you want to link to the release issue, and then use the link issues component.
