Why is a sprint is creating itself in a project and assigning issues to it?

A sprint with the same name as one in another project is appearing in one of our team's projects. 

 

There are no issues shared between the two projects, no workflows in place to enable this action and no automations enabled at all in either project. 

 

We have tried moving the items it is assigning to the sprint and deleting the sprint, and changing the dates and renaming the sprint but it just comes back again over the next hour or so. 

Has this happened before to anyone else and how do I get it to stop?

Sprints exist in boards, not in projects.

Regardless, are the board getting data from Company Managed projects or Team Managed projects?

If you go to the Advanced Issue Search screen and do start to enter a search for issues thus:

sprint = start typing in the name of the sprint

...do you find that you have multiple matching entries, and multiple entries for the exact same name?

Jira allows you to create sprints with names that are not unique. So, the first thing to determine is do you actually have two different sprints with the same name, or only one sprint showing up in two boards?

A sprint can show up in more than one board. A sprint will show up in a Scrum board if either of these conditions is met:

1. The sprint was created in that board

2. The sprint has issues assigned to it that are in the scope of the issue filter used by the board.

Jira allow you to add issues to sprints even if those issues are not part of the board where the sprint was created. When that happens, the sprint will display in any board where the filter for the board encompasses issues in the sprint. Only the issues within the scope of the board will be displayed in the sprint in that board. Here is an example:

You have Board ABC which has a filter for project=ABC

You have Board XYZ which has a filter for project=XYZ

In Board ABC you create "Sprint 1" and add to it issue ABC-1. 
At this point "Sprint 1" displays in Board ABC and shows that it has issue ABC-1 in it.

Then you view issue XYZ-100. In XYZ-100 you directly edit the Sprint field and add to it "Sprint 1".
Now in Board ABC you still see "Sprint 1" and it shows in it only issue ABC-1.
But also in Board XYZ you see "Sprint 1" and it shows in it only issue XYZ-100.

You can find out all the issues assigned to a sprint, regardless of what project they are in, but using the Advanced Issue Search screen with this filter:

sprint = the name of your sprint
