Are the Kanban features within Jira on par with those in Trello?

I'm trying to decide whether there is any benefit of buying Trello licences to manage planned IT projects (not necessarily software development projects) in addition to the standard Jira licence.

Have you considered using Jira Work Management instead of Trello for non-IT teams?

Hi @Dave Mathijs . Thanks for your reply. Yes, I'm trying to understand if there is anything in Trello that can't be done in Jira Work Management. As far as I can tell, JWM has all the functionality of Trello but Trello looks simpler to use and has better visual presentation.

It all depends on your users' needs.

However, nothing prevents you from creating a Jira Software project for non software development projects.

Jira Work Management offers you a range of different views and might have an easier learning curve.

I think the question is the wrong way around! It should be asking if Trello supports Kanban as well as Jira's Kanban boards do! (the answer is "almost") Trello is a generalised item organisation system, whereas Jira is an issue tracker, and the Kanban boards in Jira are built to support pure Kanban issue tracking!

But in your case, I'd give you the same advice Dave already has - take a look at JWM, and look at layering kanban boards over them.

Thanks @Nic Brough -Adaptavist- . I should have also said that I’m already paying for Jira licences as we use the sprint framework for software development. My question should really have been whether paying for trello would give me anything I wouldn’t get I from my existing jira licences. It looks as though the answer is no.

It probably won't, no. Trello is, at its heart, a simple thing for looking after miscellaneous stuff. Jira is a step up - its heart is an issue tracker, so it is built on a workflow engine, fields, and people who need to track things.

Trello supports Kanban processes simply because you've got a pile of cards which you can arrange into a nice layout that looks Kanban. Jira does it deliberately, with an underlying workflow, so it's a bit more aligned.

If you've got Jira for tracking, I'd use that. Trello is absolutely fantastic for helping you organise things, but when you're in a place where you want an issue tracker, it's not as good at it as Jira is (off the shelf). I wouldn't pay for both in your case (although I know a lot of places that do - they have development and support teams working in Jira and then other teams that don't need issue tracking to that level working absolutely fine in Trello)
