Is it possible to put a status as BLOCKED in the JIRA workflow

Question

I want to introduce a status as BLOCKED in my workflow.

However I do not want the tickets in that status to be taken into sprint.

Basically what I want is to create a status as BACKLOG, and name it as BLOCKED. Basically when I click on backlog, it show show,

* Current Running Sprint
* Backlog
* Blocked tickets

Is this possible?

You can put whatever status you like into a workflow.

To prevent people from putting them into a sprint, either

* change the board filter to exclude them as sprint-able items - if it's currently "Project = XYZ", change it to "Project = XYZ and status != blocked"
* Remove "blocked" from the column mapping

Either way, you need to think about how you are going to work with blocked issues - they are going to disappear from your backlog and board, and you'll want something to manage them.

If you want your "Backlog" view to show separate sections for:

* Your active sprint
* Your "Blocked" status tickets
* Your unblocked backlog

You could:

* create a sprint called "Blocked"
* add a post-function to your workflow transition into the "Blocked" status that sets the issue's "Sprint" value to the sprint you created and named "Blocked"

This means that any time an issue gets transitioned to the "Blocked" status, it will be assigned to the "Blocked" sprint.

Make sure the "Blocked" status is in the same column as your "Backlog" status in the board configurations.

Note that this does not prevent a user from adding one of these issues to their own sprint, but it does give you the view separation you were looking for.

In my experience, when teams add a status named "Blocked" to their flow they are accepting that "Blocked" is a normal part of how they work, instead of an exception to flow.

Please consider if the team wants this condition to be normal.  Jira has features to help make issues which are stuck visible for special attention, such as Flagging.  That visibility may help the team deal with the condition sooner, and consider how to prevent such types of blocking in the future.
