Fill custom field with defined comment text

Hello everyone,

please excuse my english. I hope you have a solution for us. We are looking for a way to fill a custom field or the description field with defined comment text from the task.

We write things that still have to be done in red text color in the comments. Now we want to show the red text from the comments in the custom field or in the description field as summary.

Is there any solution?

Ok, thanks @Bill Sheboy for the pointer. I regrouped and now this rule is much simpler (and simultaneously a lot more complicated):

RED TASKS:

So, because we're teaching fishing here...

"issue.comments" is a list.
If you precede a list with a #, that lets you iterate through the list.
So for every comment, we are using the #if operator to see if the body of the comment has a match for the wiki markup for red text. (We have to escape the braces around the {color} tags with \ because those characters are used in smart values.)
If red text is found, it then includes a * (bullet) and then the text.
Finally, unless it is the ^last comment, it adds a couple of newlines.

Caveats: This will only work on the first "red task" in a comment. So if a single comment is:

Hey Kevin please {color:#ff5630}do this important thing{color} oh but don't forget to also {color:#ff5630}do this other super-important thing{color}

You will only get the first task:

• do this important thing

There's a way you can do this, but you'll need to do something about this idea:

First of all, the content you write in red that should be taken to a custom field, you have to make this content a unique comment. No other information that doesn't need to be copied, for example. This is because I will explain later

Second, you can follow something on this automation idea here:

TRIGGER: Issue Commented

CONDITION:

Follow this screen idea exactly, I'm using #copy in "Second value" to make Jira understand that this comment should be taken to another field. You can use another word, I prefer to use this because every comment I want to fill that field, at the end of it I must use #copy so that Jira fills the custom field with the content. You can use anything you want as long as the information present here is also in the comment.

For example. If I add a comment like this:

Create an automation for my manager. #copy

Jira will take this comment into the custom field.

The next step is in the ACTION, so you insert the option "Edit issue";
Select the custom field you want;
Include the following smartvalue: {{issue.comment.last.body}}

This means that Jira will populate that field with the value of the last comment. If your condition is right and the comment has #copy. Then all that comment will be taken into the custom field.

This will work fine for you. I hope it helps.

Hey, I almost have this, but I'm missing something. Maybe @Bill Sheboy can give me an assist?

I first Edit Description (Assuming it's empty until you do fill it up with the Red tasks. Otherwise you would edit a Custom Field):

All of the Red Tasks:

Then I use Advanced Branching to iterate through all of the comments, and if there's any with red {color:#ff5630} then I add that to the existing Description (making sure to re-fetch it with every iteration):

My test bug has 3 comments with red text:

Audit Log seems to show all the Red Comments, but my Edit operation seems to be miss the second of the three red comments.

Log shows this:

RED COMMENT: DON’T FORGET THIS TASK, RED COMMENT: HERE IS ANOTHER TASK, RED COMMENT: Red Task., RED COMMENT:

But the ticket ends up with this Description:

All of the Red Tasks:

DON’T FORGET THIS TASK

Red Task.

Hrm, maybe another re-fetch? Nope. Hrm... frustrating.

Gah, and I realize now my logic is wrong because if it was working you'd empty with empty bullet points for any comments that don't have any red text. So I put an IF condition in there, and again, the Audit Log is showing the right comments:

RED COMMENT: DON’T FORGET THIS TASK,
RED COMMENT: HERE IS ANOTHER TASK,
RED COMMENT: Red Task.

But weirdly my EDIT is still failing. Argh.

Well done! You note this only works for the first red-markup found. I wonder if you could nest the iterators to handle any multiples...assuming the comment has at least line breaks between the to-do items.

Basically add another iterator which splits the comment on line breaks, inside of the comment iterator, and then use the smart value list filtering for the red-markup on the inner-most list.

Hrm. Does split support newlines (\n?).

I was thinking of hacking around with a few replaceAll commands, trying to replace everything up to and including \{color:#ff5630\} tags (but not closing \{color\} tags) with asterisks (bullets), and then \{color\} tags (and everything afterwards?) with newlines.
