Custom math equation in a custom numeric field

I've added a custom numeric field to my issue type and I want the number displayed to be based on 2 other custom field entries. For example it will be pulling the values from field A and B to do: (A +B) /2

I saw some examples like below in the docs but I can't enter anything but numbers in that field. Am I missing something?

Usually, you'd use Automation to manage this - for example...

Trigger: Field A updated
Condition: Field A and B are both populated
Action: Edit Field C - set value based on a smart value math calculation

I don't have access to automation so I thought there's a more basic way to just use a custom expression directly in the custom field

the numeric field only takes numbers so I can't even input smart value formulas, as I understand it. But maybe I'm missing something obvious

You need automation. If you don't have it you will need other 3rd party plugins.

If you're on Jira Cloud, Automation is a native feature - it comes in two levels...

Project Admins can set automation rules for their own Project
Jira Admins can set multi-project and global automation rules

Unless your Jira Admins have turned off project-level rule creation, then only Jira Admins can create all rules.

Are you a Jira Admin? If not - could you check with them to see if they would create a rule for you, or give you access to create them?
