Hi,

We have one custom field named "child count of epic".

We need to calculate number of child issues per Epic and store it in the custom field mentioned above.

We are using jira cloud.

May I know how we can achieve this by using automation rule.

You should be able to do it like this:

This example fires every time an issue is created. If that issue is not an epic it branches into the epic and then queries for all issues under that epic. I write what is returned from from the lookup into the Summary.

To help, here are key things to copy/paste:

Lookup Query

"Epic Link" = {{issue}}

Another different solution that you could try besides using Jira Automation Rules would be using our plugin Smart Fields for Jira, which allows you to define what information you need and show the results live in custom fields.

For this current case, you can directly obtain the number of issues under an Epic using the following expression:

<strong>%{count(issuesUnderEpic())}</strong>

You can obtain more details regarding this solution in our official documentation.

Yes, and...to what Mark suggests:

I would change the condition from "Issue type not equal to Epic" to be "Issue type is one of the following..." using the types you use under epics. That may prevent any side-effects for parent/child changes later by the automation team (e.g. team-managed projects).

@Mark Segall it looks like what you've highlighted would work in my case but it's just not working.... Feel like I'm missing something really obvious.

My epic has 2 fields - total stories and total unestimated stories. i've tried both as text fields and numerical values. i just want these to show how many of the stories under the epic is estimated (i.e. has a value in t-shirt size field) vs total (no filter).

With it not updating i tried to put in hard coded values - 1 and 2. Even that doesn't update.

see below for my version of your rule above. the automation is running, the fields don't update.

Another issue - even if this works, it wouldn't stay current unless there are stories being created non stop? i.e. when a story does get estimated, the value in the epic would change. so presumably i need a on modify automation too - but that's next!

@Azim Husain Hi, I'm having the same issues as you do, the rule isn't working for me, no matter how many child issues I have the returned number of the {{lookupIssues.size}} equals zero.
