I have created a Custom Numeric Field as "Age".I want to Update( incrementally ) this field Automatically everyday to reflect amount of days the JIRA Issue is status is "IN PROGRESS"how can I achieve it using Automation ?
Hello @Muzammil Metkar ,
If you want to update an existing field, without the issue being updated, you need to run a background service. You can do something like this by developing a custom plugin or using the Script Runner app from marketplace. In either case, this will cause too many updates on your Jira issues and thus create a lot of history records. I really do not recommend this approach.
Alternatively, you can use the Scripted Field custom field type provided by Script Runner. This will require you to write some custom script code to do the calculation but it will at least give you a way to get the values without updating the underlying issue regularly.
(I am not affiliated by Script Runner by the way.)
If you are OK with using a marketplace app, let me recommend our solution that provides the best flexibility. Our team at OBSS built Time in Status app for this exact need. It is available for Jira Server, Cloud, and Data Center.
Time in Status allows you to see how much time each issue spent on each status and on each assignee. (Also available on issue view screen)
The app has Consolidated Columns feature. This feature allows you to combine the duration for multiple statuses into a single column and exclude unwanted ones. It is the most flexible way to get any measurement you might want. Measurements like Issue Age, Cycle Time, Lead Time, Resolution Time etc.
For all numeric report types, you can calculate averages and sums of those durations grouped by the issue fields you select. For example total in-progress time per customer (organization) or average resolution time per week, month, issuetype, request type, etc. The ability to group by parts of dates (year, month, week, day, hour) is particularly useful here since it allows you to compare different time periods or see the trend.
The app calculates its reports using already existing Jira issue histories so when you install the app, you don't need to add anything to your issue workflows and you can get reports on your past issues as well. It supports both Company Managed and Team Managed projects.
Time in Status reports can be accessed through its own reporting page, dashboard gadgets, and issue view screen tabs. All these options can provide both calculated data tables and charts.
And the app has a REST API so you can get the reports from Jira UI or via REST.

Hello @Muzammil Metkar
You can try a Time in Status for Jira Cloud add-on developed by my SaaSJet team.
It generates 7 types of status reports, including a Time in Status report. It shows the time an issue has been spent in each status.
Also, in the "Total" column you can see the total time (the AGE) that has been spent for solving each issue.
Is that what you need? If you have any addtional questions, please, write me.
