I have imported my issues into JIRA and now wish to setup the Github integration. It is however not fining any relevant Github entries. What needs to match so that the Github entries are picked up?
Hello @Jonathan Spink
Welcome to the community.
As per the documentation
https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/integrate-with-github/
...it seems to me that the links to Github commits triggered when the commit is made, and the commit message must have the Jira Issue ID in it.
There is not a process to retroactively link entries already in Github to the issues in Jira.
Thanks Trudy. So if I now add a Github entry and mention the issue key from JIRA, it will go find it? Or do I have to run an import?
Looking at the doc I linked above I see that I was wrong. Per the doc
After you link an account, Jira Software automatically starts looking for commits that reference issue keys. "
If your integration is set up correctly, then it appears that Jira should've searched GitHub for commit messages that included the Jira Issue Keys. And subsequently when you do new code commits and the commit message includes the Jira issue ID, the link to the commit should automatically appear in the Jira issue.
Have you worked through that document to make sure the integration is set up correctly? Are the repos showing up in Jira in the DVCS Accounts page?
Have you allocated the "View Development Tools" permission in your Jira projects so that users will be able to see the commit info in the Jira issues?
Disclaimer: I don't have Jira integrated with Github. We use Gitlab.
Thanks Trudy, this is starting to make sense! My difficulty is that we're moving our changes database to JIRA, so the current 'code' is now a JIRA issue key but they're different. So, maybe we can't pull in the old Github entries, only the new ones.
In your experience does the JIRA issue key have to be at the beginning of the Github subject line, or anywhere in the subject or comments?
