To start with, I'm a complete novice with Jira.
When I try to configure my board I'm shown only one board option 'Columns and statuses'.
Where can I find other options like swimlanes, card colours and layout etc.?
You're looking at a board for a team-managed-project - these do not (yet) have swimlanes (beyond the "group by" options), card colours, layouts and so-on.
