How to create customize project categories in JIRA

Hey all,

Hope all of you are having a good time and staying safe. I am having a critical query for my JIRA project which has been stated below

Currently in JIRA cloud, we have just 3 types of project types as "software", "business" and "Support". Is there any way of adding any custom project categories? A plug-in to do this will also be a good option if possible

So those are project types and there isn’t a way to add to that list. However you can add project categories which are just text fields. If you go to projects > view all projects you will see that there is the Project categories field and you are free to add whatever you want there.

this is basically a project label. I use this for things like archiving projects or project specific to certain functional groups.

Click on settings icon --> Projects --> Project Categories --> here you can create new categories for logical grouping.

Thanks a lot for the info. Can I use the same project category to define automation rules? As an example, can we define an automation rule to run just for projects under a certain custom project category?

You can use the category field in you query (JQL) to define the scope of the automation rule.

Yes what Charlie says is the way to go. You can also simply copy the rule and add to desired projects. The advantage of this is unlimited executions which is important for Standard deployments with limits n global automation rules.
