Adding a timer to a JIRA ticket

We have a Software project board (so not a support board) and would like monitor how long a ticket stays in a certain kanban status, in particular we would like to then notify the assigned resource when the ticket has been in the status for x amount of time. Or as a minimum show the timer when viewing the ticket on the board.

Hi James,

This is an area where Jura is lacking to be honest. You can consider an app ad on like this one - time-in-status-for-jira-cloud . Note, I have no direct experience with this app and there may be others in the marketplace to consider as well. An out-of-the-box solution though pretty ugly would be to create a custom time in status date field and when the issue enters the status then record the date using automation and then have another automation rule that runs daily to check how long the issue has been in that status and notify the user if appropriate.

Thanks Jack for the input. On the automation rule which runs daily to check how long the issues has been in a certain status, could you help me on this as I have looked at automation to try and do this but couldn't find a suitable automation trigger.

adding to what Jack said two idea come to mind...

1.) when using a board you could utilize the "Days in column" function, it puts a graphical representation into the card showing when one is open for a pretty huge amount of time (not a directly timer, though - I am afraid)...

2.) with JQL you can get some additional insights, again, unfortunately not a timer in this meaning...

project = DEMO AND status = Open AND NOT status CHANGED AFTER -30d

This should show issues of status "Open" in Project "Demo" where the status has not been changed the last 30 days.

Also (but this was already touched by Jack perfectly) the one or another App could be of help.
You can test some from Marketplace without having to pay for them upfront.

As an alternative, you can try Status Time app developed by our team. It provides reports on how much time passed in each status.

Once you enter your working calendar into the app, it takes your working schedule into account too. That is, "In Progress" time of an issue opened on Friday at 5 PM and closed on Monday at 9 AM, will be a few hours rather than 3 days. It has various other reports like assignee time, status entry dates, average/sum reports by any field(eg. average in progress time by project, average cycle time by issue creation month). And all these are available as gadgets on the dashboard too.

Time in Status allows you to see how much time each issue spent on each status or assigned to each assignee. You can also combine statuses into consolidated columns to see metrics like Ticket Age, Resolution Time, Cycle Time, or Lead Time.

You can calculate averages and sums of those durations grouped by the issue fields you select. (For example, see the total InProgress time per Epic or average Resolution Time per issue type).

Can your app show visibility on the ticket if it spends more than a week in status? I don't need a report necessarily, I just need the actual ticket on the board to have visibility into how old it is.

Time in Status by OBSS has Filter and Sort options which will allow you to filter or sort issues based on time spent in a status.

These features are available on both the main Time in Status reporting page and dashboard gadgets. For boards, we have the Time in Status tab that displays this information on the issue details view of an issue.

A report isn't helpful because I would like the team to be able to see on the board which tickets are not being focused on. I don't want them to look in a few places to source their information. I would like the ticket to display assignee ticket number etc and to display the timer of time spent in status.
