What are the best practices when importing projects?

Hi All,

 

I was asked to import a project and was wondering what are the best practices/tips for doing this. Is there anything I need to do before, during or after importing a project? Should imports only be done after-hours? How long does it usually take to import a 3G zip file?

 

My biggest worry is breaking something. What are the to do's or not do's?

Hi JRodney,

the first general advice, but not limited to your question, is always to test on a non-production environment. Jira Cloud meanwhile has the Sandbox feature to accomplish such. Sandbox is available in Premium Plans and above.

The screenshot you showed is aimed towards a system restore. This operation is destructive and will remove any data before it imports data from a backup file you provide.

An estimate on how long it takes the amount of data you mentioned is not an easy thing to do. It depends on your broadband connection and complexity of data.

Doing the export out of office hours is always a bonus.

Overall: most important step in my eyes is to choose the CSV import from admin panel and to test on a test environment (Sandbox or another cloud site).

If there is something to do after the import depends on the data to be imported. You will get an informational message on how the import went. If you look at those information you get an idea on what is still to do (if any). This, as said previously, depends from import to import, though.
