Difference between workflow and scheme

Easy question here I think but I'm a little fuzzy on this. I know what a workflow is. So in Jira Software on a task board for example, To Do-In Progress-Done is a workflow. But what is a scheme exactly? Is it a type of workflow or is it a workflow that I modify?

Hello Jim.

A workflow is linked to an issue-type. For example you will have a workflow (number 1) for a story. And you may have a different process in your company that requires Bugs, and a specific workflow (number 2) to it. So now you will have a workflow number 1 for stories and a workflow 2 for bugs.

In Jira you manage workflows in projects. 1 project = 1 scheme. A scheme gathers all the workflows for one project. So if you use stories and bugs for project A, you will have one workflow scheme linked to the project.

If you use only stories for a project B, you will have a different worfklow scheme.

Workflow schemes describes how a project will behave in terms of issue types + Worfklows.
Workflows describe how a task behaves all along its lifecycle.

Workflows are the path that issues take along your process. The statuses in the workflow are the steps along the path.

Different Issue Types can be associated with different workflows on the same project. So to group them all together you place them under a Workflow Scheme. And then the Workflow Scheme is attached to the project.

Hey Jim - yes, that is correct for your image above. You are using 3 different workflows it looks like for that scheme.

One more question and I'll have it nailed. There is also a notification scheme (and there may be others.) So if I know that my project scheme is the collection of workflows linked to issue types, where does the notification scheme fit in? I know what it does. But is it then fair to say that my project has two schemes - a project scheme and a notification scheme?

Well your project has about 9 schemes lol

Some schemes are simply at the project level and not broken down with further components. That's true for the Notification Scheme and the Permission Scheme. There are no further notification components per issue type, etc. Just a single group function more or less.

It is your Issue Type Scheme. When configuring a project you have to configure a lot of schemes for it.

To be more precise than before, an issue type is a type of ticket in your project, and an Issue Type Scheme is the collection of the type of tickets you can raise in the same project.

A workflow is the lifecycle of a ticket. A workflow scheme is the collection of behaviours for the Issue Types in your project.
