I want to assign a defect to a group of people, how can I do it?

 

I have created a group of email ids with 4 people & now want to assign a defect to that group using one email id, so that all 4 will get email when a defect is assigned to that group's email id.

You can not.  Jira's assignee field is supposed to represent the one person currently responsible for dealing with the issue.  So it is a single-selection of one user.

The reason for this is simple real-world experience - if you have two or more assignees on an issue, you can absolutely guarantee that the group will drop issues because they all thought someone else was doing it (with one minor case where it doesn't matter)

You can, and should, have a way to show that other people might be involved though - some use watchers, most use custom fields for team or group, a set of individuals or explicit fields by role.
