Is there a smart value or way to obtain the name of an epic? issue.epic.key returns the key but I would like to retrieve that the label in the issue displays.

What field on the Epic are you looking to retrieve? The Epic Name?
If this is from the Epic itself, you just need "issue." because it doesn't refer to an Epic Link - eg:
If this is from the child of an Epic, you need to utilise "issue.epic." - eg:
