When writing JQL, my assignees turn into userid's instead

My users are starting to forge their way into writing JQL and selecting things like assignees.  However, when the JQL is entered, the persons name converts to a alpha-numerical string (which I can only assume is the userid) making the JQL unreadable.

Has anyone experienced this?
