Is there anyway to eliminate the prior email thread when people are replying to comments via email? It makes viewing much more difficult

You could try to experiment with text smart values and especially with subStringBefore(), in order to get all text before a specific sub string. What I would do is to search for the body of the last comment and place it as a substring.
