I'm looking to add check box action items in the description of a JIRA Project ticket.
If you're a JIRA admin you can add a custom checkbox field to the ticket type.
Can you please provide steps to doing this?
Hi @ray.b ,
By native functionality you will not be able to add check boxes in description field. However you can use Issue Checklist Pro or Smart Checklist for Jira enterprise in order to define acceptance criteria ,To-do list for your software projects.

Hi @ray.b
If you don't want to pay, you can try Issue Checklist Free which is a free sibling of Issue Checklist Pro 🏆 .
Cheers,Jack
Hi Jack,
What with economies suffering due to the global pandemic, everyone's fighting for money they hope to get in the next financial year. So getting any add-ons is a big ask. Is there any chance Issue Checklist Free could be adapted for Server as well as cloud?
Warm regards
Colin
Hi @ColinB,
We should be able to answer that question in 2-3 months.
The problem with this it the checkbox items are saved with the field when it's created.
So if you've got a ticket that a developer is populating with a list of actions to be done, which are unique to that ticket, you can't do it.

That's what I want to do! It seems so simple. Extend the rich text field type to allow checkbox as a formatting option - just like in Confluence page editing, you can just slap a checkbox in anywhere.
If you haven't already, you can vote for the feature here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRASERVER-47605
You can switch to the source view and add HTML
<ul style="list-style-type: none"><li><label style="word-wrap:break-word" for="ac-1"><input style="vertical-align:middle" type="checkbox" id="ac-1" name="ac-1" />Acceptance Criteria 1</label></li><li><label style="word-wrap:break-word" for="ac-2"><input style="vertical-align:middle" type="checkbox" id="ac-2" name="ac-2" />Acceptance Criteria 2</label></li><li><label style="word-wrap:break-word" for="ac-3"><input style="vertical-align:middle" type="checkbox" id="ac-3" name="ac-3" />Acceptance Criteria 3</label></li><li><label style="word-wrap:break-word" for="ac-4"><input style="vertical-align:middle" type="checkbox" id="ac-4" name="ac-4" />Acceptance Criteria 4</label></li></ul>
Another alternative, assuming what's needed is a very light-weight visual indication of the status of a list item embedded in a JIRA description, is to use the the bracket notation for creating the tick and cross icons, e.g. in the description create a list of items prefixed with (?) and that renders the question mark icon.
Then as the items need to be updated to indicate "done", change the (?) to (/) which renders a green tick. Or (x) renders a red cross.
This works with out-of-the-box JIRA Cloud.
I have had this concern as well. I'm baffled on how simple it would be to just extend a meager markdown chekbox into the Jira Markdown spec... but so far it isn't happening.
So, what we've done at work is simply use emojis.
Here's the square for an empty checkbox: ⬜ (look up square with [Win + . ] )
And heres's the square with a filled checkbox: ✅ (look up check with [Win + . ] )
Seems simple, slightly counterintuitive since it can't be interacted with, but visibly the list is there.
This has already partially happened. Jira Product Discovery supports a markdown checkbox. This feels so close, but so far Atlassian has not prioritized brining it into Jira Software projects.
Quite. Jira projects seems to be the dumb child at the end of the line.
Yay! Something simple!
