Does moving to DONE mark issue as Resolved with Resolution Date?

I would like to better understand how Jira knows when an item is Resolved.  If someone updates an issue status to "Done" will that trigger Jira to know it is resolved and add a resolved date?

Some of our Jira projects have workflows where users can change to any status without having a transition.  Basically all status have "all" as the transition path.  Jira seems to default most status to "todo" (gray), some to "in-progress" (blue) and then Done has a (green color).  Will Jira still date stamp items to Resolved with a Resolution date if they are changed to a Done status.

There is a difference between Resolution and Status Category (which are represented via the green, blue and gray colours).

You need to choose when to set a resolution - there are a few options:

Simplified Workflow:

If you're using a simplified workflow, you can set the resolution from the board. If you're the Board Admin:

1. Go to options (3-dot icon in upper-right) > Board Settings
2. Select Columns from the left-hand view
3. Under your "Done" statuses, check "Set Resolution" - this will set the resolution to Done each time an issue reaches that status

If you're not sure if you're on a simplified workflow, just go to the board and check if this option exists. If not, you'll need the other option...

Complex Workflow:

For unsimplified workflows, you'll need to add the resolutions via either a post-function or using the resolve issue screen.

You'll need to be a Jira Admin to do this and then these instructions are useful to take you through the steps.

Note: This isn't the same for Next-Gen, where resolution appears to set when the issue reaches the last column - which is classed as "done".
