Is there any way to use the @mention functionality in comments from within vs code?

I am using the vs code extension to view, create and update Jira issues for projects I'm working on. It works well except that I can't use the @mention functionality in the comments which is a bit of a deal breaker!

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get this working?
