May I replace Jira Assignee field with User Group Picker field?

The title says all:

May I replace Jira Assignee field with User Group Picker field?

What is the best way for doing this?

Is the solution provided here applicable?

We have "Assigned group" field and both with Assignee are required.

My idea is to safe the Service Desk the trouble to look at Excel file for group members.

Assignee is not a custom field, so no, the solution you provided will not work. However, you can specify the assignable users from the permission scheme and AFAIK, it will allow you to specify a group picker custom field for the assignable users. Basically you will allow only users belonging to the group specified by "Assigned group" custom field to be the assignees of the issue.

No, it is not a custom field, so your link won't work.

Furthermore, the assignee field is quite deeply integrated into the core and it's behaviour is hard to change. If you "replace" it with some other field, then you lose all the functions around assignee.

The best you can do is to add your group field and then I'd use it in the "can be assigned issue" permission, which means "people in the group select in the field will be added to the possible assignee list"

Can you explain to me a little bit more about what you are suggesting?
