To make invisible a custom field

Thibaut Bourelly July 11, 2025

Hello,

My question is enough simple, how to make invisible a custom field ? I cannot see anymore this capability in the fields configuration. I guess this is in another config, but I cannot find it...

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thibaut.

Hello @Thibaut Bourelly ,

Good day! Welcome to Atlassian community :)

I would like to inform you that there has been some recent changes where “hide/show” options are replaced with “add/remove” as explained in this community post:

Field configuration changes

Adding and removing fields from Field Configuration Schemes

We’re introducing the ability to add and remove fields from field configurations:

  • Removing a field from a field configuration functions similarly to hiding it, making it unavailable to projects associated with the field configuration scheme. However, a key difference is that when a field is removed, its configurations (e.g. descriptions) are not preserved and will need to be entered again if the field is re-associated.
  • Adding a field to a field configuration is similar to showing/unhiding a field. It becomes available to the projects associated with the field configuration scheme.

Please check the document below on how to add/remove the field:

To modify the behavior of fields in Jira, you need to modify the field configurations that those fields have been defined in.

  1. Select > Work items.
  2. Under FIELDS, select Field Configurations to view all your field configurations.
  3. Locate the field configuration of interest and click the Configure link to open the View Field Configuration page, which lists all system and custom fields in your Jira installation for that field configuration.
  4. In the Actions  column, you can perform the following actions for any field:
    • Edit — change the field's description (i.e. help text) and renderer (see Configuring renderers for more information)
    • Remove a field from this field configuration
    • Required/Optional — set a field to be required (so that whenever a field is edited it must be given a value) or optional.

Hope that helps!

Thank you

Thanks for your reply. But my question was enough simple.

According to your answer and if I understand correctly, if I remove the field I cannot use it as in a previous version of jira cloud, to store for example a value (not visible by the users) and use it in a filter or automation for example. Is it correct ?

Hi Thibaut - The simplest answer would be to just not put it on any screens.

Hello @Thibaut Bourelly ,

Thank you for your question! 😊

NOTE -

  • Hiding a field in the field configuration means it will be hidden in all applicable screens, regardless of whether it's added to the screen.
  • You cannot set a hidden field to be required.
  • The Summary and Issue Type fields cannot be hidden.

You can make a custom field invisible on issue screens in Jira Cloud by adjusting its field configuration.
