How can I create a recurring event on the timeline?

Nicole Rosanna Vitiello March 8, 2024

Within the timeline on a project, I would like to add an event that happens every month. Would this be possible?

Is there an add-on I need to install?

Hi @Nicole Rosanna Vitiello -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

That could be done with an automation rule with a scheduled trigger.  Automation rule features are built-in for Jira Cloud, so no additional addon is needed.

To get you started on creating your rule, please refer to these documentation and example sources:

If you run into challenges, please post images of your rule and explain what is not working as you expected so the community can help.

Kind regards,
Bill

Is there another way? I want to be able to see all the monthly cards from the beginning of the year if possible.

I have already seen the possibility of automation, however it doesn't provide me with a full year view with all activities.

Let's back up a bit...

What problem are you trying to solve?  That is, why do this?  Knowing that will help the community to offer better suggestions.

I was suggesting how to create a Jira issue, one for each month.  Perhaps you instead mean something different, and not creating issues.

If you did need to create the issues, the timeline view would allow you to scroll back in time, to some range, to see the monthly issues.

I would like to have one event that is a recurring one. That is; if I scroll into the future (say a couple months from now), I can already see this monthly event and organize dependent activities around it.

An automation rule could run on a schedule, creating issues with fields set in the future, such as setting the Due Date several months in advance.

Hi @Nicole Rosanna Vitiello

Welcome, so you will need an issue that is created every first day of the month.

Create an automation rule on the project, with a scheduled trigger.

This would fulfil your requirement

I have the same need and I can't understand how it's not a basic thing in work management software...
