Information architecture/ structure

stpl June 24, 2020

Hi,

I need to create an information architecture/ structure in confluence (a repository), but i'm unsure how to start or what is the best way to create a structure in confluence.

I have thought about taxonomy method and create out from a main topic/task, but is there another way of doing so.

What can you guys recommend ?

Hi @stpl

There are a lot of approaches you can take in Confluence and I'd say that starts with your spaces. Having to navigate to a space really helps set context for users. I've seen spaces basically revolve around two things: teams and topics.

  • Each team has a space and each contains parent pages for meeting notes, processes, etc.
  • The topic based spaces I've seen tend to be based more on Jobs to Be Done. Whether it's a space with HR information, or product documentation, the high level pages tend to coordinate to the most important questions/jobs people have in mind when coming to the space. These are typically "concept topic" style pages. Long form introductions to the contents below. From there, most child pages provide more conceptual detail, procedures, or reference material.

Though we don't have much directly in the way of IA help, my team has this guide with tips and best practices for writing structured content in Confluence. Perhaps it will be useful to you.
