Throwback Thursday: what did you collect as a kid? #TBT

It's Thursday!
giphy
My wife and I just watched a great movie called "You gotta believe". (Good movie; I recommend it!) It´s about a dad who coaches his son's little league baseball. There is a scene in it where the boys on the team ride their BMX bikes to a shop that sells baseball cards. Got me thinking about what I collected as a kid. I was 7 years old when the first (4th) Star Wars movie came out so I was super excited about that. I collected quite a few figures. We didn't play baseball in Iceland so...

Let’s make it a great Thursday!

Such a fun throwback again, @Kristján Geir Mathiesen!
My sister and I used to collect stickers-everything from cartoon characters to shiny holographic ones. We had whole albums filled with them! Those childhood collections really bring back great memories. ✨ Also, thanks for sharing about the movie! I’ll check it out.

I collected so many things as a kid (and I still do today as an adult :D).

I think a couple of my largest collections were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters and POGs.

I still cherish the thrill of collecting cricket players' cards and meticulously recording their stats. As a kid, I would spend hours poring over cricket magazines, cutting out player profiles, and updating their records in my notebook.

From Sachin Tendulkar's centuries to Shane Warne's wicket tallies, every detail was meticulously documented. My friends would often tease me, but I didn't mind – I was building a treasure trove of cricketing knowledge!

As I grew older, my collection evolved to include rare player cards, autographed photos, and even vintage cricket programs. Each item sparked memories of matches won and lost, heroes forged and legends born.

Today, my collection remains a tribute to my enduring passion for the game. Flipping through the pages, I'm transported back to a time when cricket was more than just a sport – it was a way of life

Such a nice collection @Kristján Geir Mathiesen ,

When I was a kid I collected paper napkins. So, each time when we had a celebration or went out for one, I brought a new napkin and put it into a box. I remember my granny went on a business trip and brought me a paper napkin from the event she was. I was so happy to have a napkin from another city :) What's more, I even persuaded some of my classmates to collect paper napkins so that we could exchange them and enrich our collections... I think I still have this collection somewhere at my parents' home :)

Impressive collection @Kristján Geir Mathiesen

When I was a kid, I used to collect porcelain elephant figurines. Still have a lot! Every elephant with a raised trombone of course!

Definitely brings back memories! Most certainly it was baseball cards. I think a few might even have had some value, even back in the day. But one day while I was off to university my older sister decided to clean my closet and chucked them all! I definitely had thousands of them.

Oh my, where do I start? I was and still am an automotive enthusiast, so naturally, I collected die-cast cars in different sizes. As a single (grand)child, I was very spoiled, so I had a lot of miniature cars.

  • Bburago (1/18 and 1/24)
  • Matchbox Convoy, Battle Kings, Motor City, Sea Kings, Speed Kings Superfast and Super Kings
  • Playmobil (I still have more than 400 sets today)
  • CDs (350+)
  • DVDs (350+)

OH MY GOSH!  Is it Thursday already!???   @Kristján Geir Mathiesen we both went down the Star Wars road.  I have a bunch of Star Wars collectible cards.  My action figures from the movie are the very obscure ones.  I didn't have the light-saber in the arm Luke.

I do have lots of baseball cards.  Sadly, they're barely worth the paper they're printed on now, but was fun trying to put the sets together.

Indeed another very fun topic @Kristján Geir Mathiesen

As a child I collected things like leaves and rocks and other interesting or unusual outdoor treasures (at least to me). As an adult I don't really "collect" anything but I do enjoy seeing what others are collecting.

Hi @Kristján Geir Mathiesen! I collected stamps, but it got too expensive for my weekly allowance because I didn't know anybody who lived in an interesting place (and so, would have different stamps from what I had) so I had to buy them. I also collected rocks and minerals, which were free on the ground and fascinating to study and try to identify. Still do it today and love it!

For a few years when I was a kid, I collected brothers and sisters (but stopped at 5). 😁 When I was in my teens, boys seemed to think that girls liked stuffed animals, so I'm not sure if that counts as collecting stuffed animals or boys.

Apart from those CineStar tickets 😅 I did collect football stickers which would come for Euro and World Cups every 2 years. These were soo popular back in the day! Even to these dates, you can find people selling stickers and albums. I remember that most of us would 'gamble' on each other stickers by 'tapping' those and calling 'heads or tails' for each 😆 I think I got a couple of albums completed somewhere back home.

While writing this, I also remembered that I was so obsessed with CSI: NY that I had a full collection of DVDs of each season. I remember waiting for each season to come out in physical editions and would buy them immediately lol

I have two collections from living abroad as a kid: States Collection and Taiwan Collection

States Collection: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman action figures, coins (mainly pennies, i.e., US 1 cent), U.S. football cards, and POGs.

Taiwan Collection: Star Wars figurine keychains, WWII/commercial/Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF, i.e, Taiwan's Air Force) display models--I was obsessed w/ Taiwan's 1st "homegrown" fighter jet, the IDF, which was still in testing  (it's a 25 yr old success now and got a makeover in 2018). I also collected Tamagotchis. I had 8 and made mom co-parent when I went to school. She had a decent kill:live ratio, she actually tried on them! 😂

When we returned to the states, I resumed collecting coins and U.S. football cards. I still collect the latter to this day:
