Throwback Thursday: Tell us about a Walkie Talkie memory #TBT

It's Thursday!
giphy
Okay, I remember having a set of these when I was about 9 or 10. I thought they were the coolest ever! And we would sneak around the neighborhood, behind and under the trees and communicating newfound information about our neighbors. Well actually, what we Icelanders call trees are called small bushes everywhere else but let´s not get into that :)

Soooo, tell us about a Walkie Talkie memory
Let’s make it a great Thursday!

I have similar memories from childhood. 💜

While camping this week, my kids and their friends made similar memories. I also love that I can let them go explore while still being able to contact them. 😅

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen they WERE the coolest! My brothers and I had a set of these as well. Nothing like running around the neighborhood in the mid-80's and sending Morse Code signals to one another. Every once in a while you would pick up a band from a police car or sanitation truck and could listen in on their conversations. I remember we once picked up a full hour of Coast Guard communications (I grew up near the Great South Bay on Long Island) and we felt like we were in a movie. I have not though about that in over 35 years - thanks for bringing the memory back!

What I remember is that I always wanted a set of walkie talkies as a kid but never had one haha. But I loved playing with them when going over to a friend's house who had them.

Most recently it was using them as we took 4x4's out into the desert sand dunes outside of Dubai. You need them to stay in communication as you come over the tops of hills not to run into each other!

We used them too when I was young boy running through forest and countryside communicating with my friends, playing soldiers and spies.

Actually I still have modern set. We use them when traveling by multiple cars to coordinate the trip.

Wow, what a trip down memory lane!

Can you actually believe I found the make and model of the walkie talkie I had during my childhood?

It was the Realistic/Tandy TRC-1006, from around 1981.

Here's an extensive review of a very well maintained set of radios:

Are these the nicest sounding walkie talkies ever made? The Realistic TRC-1006

For my own children, I bought the Motorola TLKR T6, small and compact .

We used these when we were on holidays.

Walkie Talkies were awesome.  Your talking to people you know about the game you're specifically playing, and then all of a sudden, some complete stranger who just happens to be on the same channel chimes in on your conversation.  How exciting!

My brother and I loved our Walkie Talkie. We constantly used them throughout the house when "spying" on our parents. We also loved listening to audiobooks called Funkfüchse. A group of teenagers that solved crime using their Walkie Talkie.

Does anyone remember this one? I always wanted my Dick Tracey watch to work like a real Walkie Talkie. Now I got the Apple watch, but unfortunately hardly use the Walkie Talkie feature. :)

So my walkie talkie memory actually comes from right after high school. We used to take them and go to a big store. We would then play hide and seek in the store. Hiding in the clothes racks, behind items on the shelves. We would then give clues as to where we were hiding. One time, we also went to a large park and played hide and seek in the dark. We got the cops called on us because we were in the park after dark. When they arrived they let us know that it was illegal to be out there after dark but then asked us if they could play a round with us. It was one of the best memories I have heading into adulthood.

We use these occasionally when we're hunting... the new ones are much smaller, have multi-channel capabilities, and you can use a set of earphones to keep the noise from disturbing the area where you are hunting.  I have several pairs from over the years, and they all still work.

They also work when you're managing youth events.  I've helped our church on several occasions and had multiple radios on the same channel so that all the sponsors have the ability to stay in touch.  Most of mine have a rather limited range, but they're still good out a couple miles on a good day.

I realize this is a bit old school now that cell phones are ubiquitous, but they work, and they work well in areas where you may or may not have dependable cell phone service.

Far to rich during my childhood.  My sons however, were children in the 80's and had great adventures with these.  Of course I'd get involved when something important like saving the world was happening.

I always wanted walkie talkies, but we did not have money for those.  THEN, when we bought a large RV camper we got a set.... Yeah, it is weird to be excited as an adult, but it is sometimes the little things!

Wow. This takes me back.

As a kid, Used to go on adventures and secret operations. In our world, we trying to sneak into enemy base and rescue hostages. In reality, we are in the park and trails trying to find each other. :)

As an adult, used them primarily on snow trips to find one another.

Thanks @Kristján Geir Mathiesen

Me and my cousin used to play with it a lot, telling stories, playing guessing games, and singing songs. What a fun memory to have. We grow up so fast!!!

During one of our Summer trips with friends and family, we were having loads of fun on the road itself. Kids from one car used to talk to other kids in the front or back car of us. And we all still really having the green memories with us!!

Not so much a childhood walkie-talkie memory, but I remember my first "colour screen" phone I bought in my first year of university - the mighty Sanyo 7400
This phone had "Push to Talk" functionality and a button on the side of the device so it could be used like a walkie talkie.
My friend bought an identical phone and we used to PTT each other spouting things like "that's a big 10-4 rubber duckie" which was all great fun, until I forgot to switch my phone on mute before going into a lecture and my pocket started calling out to everyone around me

I remember playing with the wired walkie talkie built at home with 2 glasses and a hose though its not an actual one. It was fun to do as a kid.

I have similar memories from childhood. My brother and I would pretend that we were EMT's and use the walking to report injuries and accidents. We were so silly!

I vividly remember I just turned 7, and my uncle bought me a walkie-talkie for my birthday.

I recall it had a John Rambo-like icon on it, exactly like the image below:-
