Throwback Thursday: Favorite recipes/homemade food from the past? #TBT

It's Thursday!
giphy
Last week was my daughter's birthday and one of our neighbor gave her over 30 lbs. of ground game meat (minced meat)! So, that got me thinking what would be some good ground game recipes. Therefore, I took to Google :)
giphy
Sooooo, what are some of your favorite recipes or homemade food from the past? Some that bring back good memories. You don't have to post the recipe, unless you really want to :)
Let’s make it a great Thursday!

For my birthday a few years back, my sister made a layered pancake cake.  Between each pancake layer was jam or cream with chocolate sauce drizzled over the top and down the sides and a dusting of icing sugar on top.

Favorite recipe would be the traditional green bean casserole in the US.  Invented by the Campbell's soup company so they could sell more Cream of Mushroom soup.

These days, I prefer to make it from scratch with actual mushrooms and a roux.  I haven't figured out how to make French Fried Onions easily from scratch, but I'm still working on that.

The latest twist is using French Fried Jalapenos instead of the onions.

I think we're going to see how many foodies are going to be showing off their favorites today.

Similar to @Dan Breyen, the food that brings back memories is chicken pot pie. This too was a concoction that used Campbells or another canned soup as a base. It was a favorite when I was a kid, and my wife made it in our first few years of marriage - usually when we had leftover chicken that needed repurposing.

I think I may text her now and ask what's for dinner. I saw some extra chicken in the refrigerator...

I still miss the orange cake my mom used to make a long time ago. The best part would be the mixture for the cake. I will be waiting for the blending process to finish and the dough set for baking so I can lick the remainder. :D

What brings me back to the days is my dad making fish stew (so-called "Fiš") every once and a while. 🎣
It's basically river fish, together with onion and paprika, and of course some additional seasoning. All combined with pasta or bread. I've tried a lot of different versions of "Fiš", but none can be compared to the one he makes it.

We used to go fishing together and if we would catch anything, he would make it the next day (although most of the time we were unsuccessful so we had to go to the fish market 😅).

As a British Expat living in Rome, I'd have to say the homemade food I miss most is a Sunday Roast. Although Italian food is (obviously) amazing, I still miss the smell of a Sunday Roast coming out of the oven, which is something we always had as a kid, or a Sunday Roast in the local pub. I do it myself sometimes, but it's not quite the same.

One of my favorite memories from childhood is walking into the house after school on a cold day and smelling my mom's stuffed cabbage cooking. She only did this a few times a year, since it's time-consuming to make enough for 8 people. She probably makes it twice a year these days, but only needs to make enough for 3 of us to have for a couple of meals.

In my generation, we are too lazy to go through all this trouble, but my sister figured out a way to make something that is much easier to make (in a crockpot) and tastes almost the same. I even made it this way for my parents last month, and I think my mom was happy enough with it to maybe allow me to make it that way again.

These food memories are fantastic! For me, it's got to be shepherd’s pie - nothing beats that crispy mashed potato top over a savory filling. It’s pure comfort food and always brings back memories of cozy nights with family.

Stuffed eggplants! Simple yet savory and delicious. They remind me of a chilly autumn afternoon in our cozy kitchen.

Sorry if you haven't eaten your lunch yet, but aren't they gorgeous?

I guess the recipe/food that is at the top of my list was my mom's bread recipe. The aromas in the house while it cooked and the first bite of warm bread with dripping butter is hard to beat. Thankfully, I participated in the preparation in later years and have passed it on to my sons as well.

Something that makes a day special is our traditional baked goodbanitsa. From when I was a kid to this very moment, this food has brought feelings of warmth (not only because it's a tasty calorie bomb) and was always considered the most precious treat.
It takes a good amount of prep time, so it's not the typical breakfast you would find on a busy morning. Which meant that mom or grandma woke up at least 1.5-2 hours earlier to make and bake it.

Mmm, I make my mom's applesauce cake almost every year during the end-of-year holidays. Love it!

My grandmother always made sauerbraten.   I miss her cooking especially food her and my grandfather grew up on from Germany.

Hello

Um, minced meat, well, from meatloaf, hamburgers, cannelloni filling, lasagna, spaghetti bolognese, croquettes, etc., so many recipes can be made that you just need to use a little imagination.

Regards

One of my favorite one must be the soy sauce dipped wonton origin from Sichuan. I miss it flavor and how the filling taste and it's been a long long time ago since I last ate that dish. I tried to replicate that in my kitchen with mixing scallion oil, scallion water, corn starch, oyster sauce, fish sauce, nothing really resonate that much with that dish. But anyway, found out some new recipes that I can use in the future!

My mother used to make a tuna pasta salad with chopped spring onions. Topped it off with some chutney. Weird combo but flippin delish:)
