I was wondering if there is a way to cleaning up the dropdown list showing up in the reporter field. Even if it is only editable for admins, the list could be shorter, and I assume we have some old/not-used reporters, which could be deleted.
For sure I do not wish to delete the jira users (real persons with real roles) here, but reporters created by the tools or integrations we use, and there are other suspicious reporters probably got in through the cloud migration.

The short answer is no.
The Reporter field will suggest any user defined in the system.
There are some suggestions in Atlassian's backlog about limiting the list of users. Here are two:
