What does "Configure automatic line ending by default" mean?

When I configure SourceTree I am show a check box with the text: "Configure automatic line ending handling by default (recommended)" What does that mean? What actually happens? Does it set core.autocrlf git config? Does it set up .gitattributes? Something else? I can't find the doc on this option...
