How to apply .key license file in universal plugin manager

Having renewed our license, we've received a license .key file rather than a text string to paste into the license field ... how should we proceed?

.key files are used in older versions of JQL Tricks plugin (i.e. JIRA 6.x or older). You need to upload them under Administration > JQLT Configuration.

In JIRA7, you can get the license directly from marketplace and it is in the standard text format.

We've had our license for a while (pre 7.x) but have since upgraded to JIRA Software/7. It sounds like we purchase our latest update outside of the Marketplace to avoid having to pay full price for the plugin again. Given that, how do we proceed?
