tabs

I'm trying to format the text within a tab or the color of tabs in some of the Tab macros (Ex: SP Tab) to make the tabs stand out more on the page, however, when I try to use HTML to format them, it either breaks the macro or simply isn't applied to the tabs.  Does anyone have any experience with this?
