When creating item - Change workflow Initial Status from "backlog"

Hi,
Is there a way for me to choose a different option than "backlog" when opening an item in JIRA?
by default - it chooses backlog. how can i change default to a different step in workflow (for example: "Doing")
Also,and impornat just as much - can i add the possibility in creation pop up of the item?
