Im leading a development team that is very heavy on software development with some light electronics development. Rather than use separate tools (jira + PLM) i was hoping the Insight plugin might be generic enough to help manage components of a product (e.g. enclosure, PCB etc). Any experiences or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Douglas.
Insight is an Asset management software and much more.
In order to Implement Insight in a way which will suite you best - we do recommend that you will consult with one of our Partners, specializing in tailoring Insight to different Use cases.
Generally speaking, you can create Object (Asset) Schemas and Object Types to suite your requirements (e.g. Components (Parent) with various Components Object Types (Child Object Types with info like links to Datasheets, General properties, Prices, suppliers etc. - BTW Suppliers can be Object Types by themselves in another Schema or under another Parent)...
You can also have another Object Type like PCBs and Casings etc... as well as Products Object Type, which will reference Components, PCBs etc...
As a result you can get a "Catalog Report" to show the relevant part of your "Structure"...
While not a typical BOM we will soon enhance Reporting and IQL Filtering within Insight which will allow you some easier ways to achieve your requirements...
Kind regards,

Great answer. Thank you. Im looking forward to trying it out. I do have a related follow-up question: Given that Insight implements a highly generic model, are there templates available to help "kickstart" the Types and Attributes associated with the kind of work flow?

Hi Douglas.
At the moment, Insight comes with predefined Object Schema Templates with suggested HR, CRM or IT structures.
We plan to have more templates available in the future, but at the moment we cannot commit to any time frame.
As Insight is very generic, you can always start with any given template and "Model" it to your needs. Think Out of the box, and Insight will follow ;)
That said - When you first set up an Import in Insight, and you have your source data available (JSON format/import will greatly help here), Insight will be able to automatically create a predefined Structure and a predefined Mapping Configuration for that structure, so a base can be created (as a Template) and you can edit it before synchronizing your import - so that the Structure is adjusted to your requirements...
We love Insight.
Please feel free to brows our Documentation and our YouTube Channel for some ideas and a lot of useful information.
Cheers,

In electronics development, a bill of materials (BOM) is a list of all the components, parts, and subassemblies required to build a particular product. BOM generation typically involves creating a spreadsheet or database that lists all the components by reference designator, part number, quantity, and supplier. This information is used to order the parts, assemble the product, and track inventory. BOM generation software can automate the process of creating and updating BOMs, making it easier to manage changes and revisions to the design. These software can also help with cost estimating and tracking, and can integrate with other tools such as CAD software and project management software.
