Introducing saved views, inline-editable Insight objects, and merged team-managed fields in JXL

Hello community!

It has been a while, so today we'd like to tell you more about the latest big features we released in JXL for Jira, the all-in-one issue editor and organiser. On popular demand, you can now save views in JXL sheets to share your perfect Jira issue tables with teammates, edit Insight objects custom fields inline in the table, merge multiple fields from team-managed projects into one column, and much more.

Views

JXL enables users to create issue sheets for all sorts of purposes, the use cases are practically endless. Lots of per-user features and preferences allow for fine-tuning the tables, e.g. with issue sum-ups, groupings, hierarchy and custom issue structures, conditional cell and row formatting rules, column sorting, filtering, freezing, and more.

While sheets can be shared and accessible to teammates, the per-user choices of enabling and disabling these features and configuring these preferences within a sheet were not yet shareable. Views to the rescue!

Views, also often referred to by users as saved filters or quick views, allow you to save frequently used states and combinations of features and preferences, and can then be easily switched between, made default for a sheet, shared with teammates, and more.

More detailed documentation of the feature can be found here.

Insight objects

Insight is a feature in Jira Service Management Premium and Enterprise editions. Its flexible and open data structure allows teams to manage any kind of assets that are important to support their ITSM practices. HR, sales, marketing, legal, facilities, and other functions can also use Insight to track and manage their assets and resources in Jira.

It's now possible to add Insight object custom fields as table columns to JXL sheets in Jira Cloud. In JXL sheets, updating Insight objects fields becomes much easier and faster, especially at scale. Issues and their associated Insight objects can be listed in a comfy table view, inline edited, copy and pasted, updated in bulk, and much more.

Merged columns

Jira customers using team-managed projects (formerly referred to as next-gen projects), often do so to utilise the more decentralised permissions to create and administrate these projects. However, they also sometimes struggle with the fact that their configuration entities are separate entities. Custom fields in team-managed projects are independent, unrelated entities. This makes common use cases like editing in bulk or roll-up reporting on field values impossible.

JXL now offers so-called merged columns. These columns consolidate values from multiple individual fields from team-managed projects. Fields that would otherwise be displayed in separate columns are joined into one. If JXL detects multiple fields with the exact same name and a similar field type, across both team-managed projects and company-managed projects, it offers a merged column that can be added to sheets.

This enables lots of features and preferences to be applied to the combined field data, for example above mentioned field sum-ups, issue groupings by field, conditional formatting, column sorting, column filtering, copying and pasting field values, bulk editing these issues, and much more.

More detailed documentation of the feature can be found here.
