Using application links between multiple JIRA or Confluence instances

We have multiple JIRA instances where we would like to easily link JIRA issues in one instance to another instance via application link.  Does this work?  Are there consequences for trying to do this or tips to make it work more easily?  The same is true for Confluence and linking pages from completely separate instances of confluence.

You're probably better off looking at the official documentation – https://confluence.atlassian.com/enterprise/federating-jira-managing-multiple-instances-461504624.html

There's no such documentation for Confluence.

There are add-ons that provide additional functionality.
