How to handle user name changes

In our environment, we recently has a user change their name following a marriage. We have Crucible set to sync to an LDAP directory. When this user updated their name and email address in their ldap account (same account, not a new one), their historical data and username disappeared in Crucible, and now only their new name, and post name change content is visible. The prior name is no longer coming up in the db.

I do have historical backups of our db that reference her old account, but no clear path to import that data and tie that content to her new account.

I'm sure we could have set this up a better way. My question is, how to other companies protect against this situation when users change name? What is best practice to ensure that things like this cannot occur? Any guidance/suggestions welcome.
